S&P 500 Index Made a Record High This Morning! What Now?

Sixth time IS a Charm, after all! We wrote in our yesterday’s trading plans: “After failing four days in a row to breach the pre-pandemic record high, the index appears all set to test the record high and succeed this week, if not today”. We didn’t have to wait more than a day into the week – the index has finally pierced the pre-pandemic high a few minutes into the regular session this morning.

Skeptics argue that it is not sustainable, but believers point to the impressive earnings from the likes of WalMart. Our models continue to indicate the momentum to the upside while the index is above 3300, but a potential short-term weakness could be looming around the corner. Perma-bears might want to wait for a confirmation of reversal in the momentum before taking on directional short positions.

Read below to check out our models’ trading plans for today.

Trading Plans for TUE, 08/18:

NOTE: The index by itself is NOT tradable. The model plans here based on the S&P index level can be used to trade any instrument that tracks the index – the futures on the index (ES, ES-mini), the options on the futures (ES options), the SPX options, the ETF SPY are just a few examples of the instruments one can adapt these plans to.

Your results of implementing the following trading plans depend upon the time frame you choose to trade in (tick-chart, 1-min, 5-min, 15-min etc), the exact stop levels you use, the quality of the execution of your broker, the funding levels and margin levels of your account, your trading style and risk tolerance, and many other such factors.

These plans are NOT an investment advice to buy or sell any specific securities but are intended to aid – as informational, educational, and research tools – in arriving at your own investment/trading decisions. Always consult a Financial Advisor before making your investment/trading decisions if you are not sophisticated about these markets.

Medium-Frequency Models:  Our medium-frequency models indicate going long on a break above 3382 or 3372 with a 10-point trailing stop, and going short on a break below 3378 or 3365 with a 12-point trailing stop. Take these signals from 10:05am EST or later.

To avoid getting whipsawed, use at least a 5-minute closing or a higher time frame – depending on your risk tolerance and trading style – to determine the signals.

Note: For the trades to trigger, the breaks should occur during the regular session hours starting at 9:30am ET. By design, these models do NOT open any new positions after 3:45pm. Only one open position at any given time. Also, by design, these models carry any open positions into the overnight session, unless otherwise stated in the trading plan. For this reason, these models are to be used only when trading futures or options on futures which can trade overnight.

Aggressive Intraday Models: For today, our aggressive intraday models indicate going long on a break above 3382 or 3372 with a 10-point trailing stop, and going short on a break below 3378 or 3365 with a 12-point trailing stop. Take these signals from 10:05am EST or later.

By definition the intraday models do not hold any positions overnight – the models exit any open position at the open of the second last bar (3:58pm bar or 3:59pm bar, depending on your platform’s bar timing convention).

To avoid getting whipsawed, use at least a 1-minute closing or a higher time frame – depending on your risk tolerance and trading style – to determine the signals.

Note: For the trades to trigger, the breaks should occur during regular session hours starting at 9:30am ET. Due to the intraday nature of these aggressive models, they indicate closing any open trades at 3:58pm and remaining flat into the session close. No opening of new positions after 3:45pm. Only one open position at any given time.

NOTE: The trailing stop is activated at the entry price right when a position is opened. Remember that a “trailing stop” works differently from the traditional stop-loss order. Please bear in mind that the trailing stop’s trigger level would keep changing throughout the session (click here to read on the conceptual workings of a trailing-stop).
